This piece is the tip of one of the obelisks commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, one of ancient Egypt’s most remarkable and successful female pharaohs, who ruled during the 18th Dynasty (c. 1473–1458 BCE) in the New Kingdom. Originally, this obelisk stood at the Temple of Amun at Karnak in Thebes (modern-day Luxor), a center of immense religious and political power. Obelisks were sacred monuments, representing a sunbeam in stone and serving as physical connections between earth and the divine.
